Wilfried von Bredow schätzt diesen Band mit Gesprächen, die Tobias Endler mit siebzehn der wichtigsten amerikanischen Polit-Intellektuellen geführt hat. Entstanden ist seines Erachtens ein erhellendes und anregendes Potpourri, das Aufschluss gibt über die Rolle des "public intellectual" in den USA. Neben viel Selbstreflexion zeigt sich für ihn in den Gesprächen auch eine kräftige Portion Eitelkeit. Er hebt hervor, dass rechte, linke und zur Mitte tendierende Intellektuelle mit ihren öffentlichen Beiträgen ein "erzieherisches Projekt" verfolgten. Im Blick auf die Terror-Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 scheinen ihm die Auskünfte der Interview-Partner allerdings wenig klar.
