Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Good. 4to. 158, [2] pp. with 286 illustrations, including 93 in color. Additional text by Harald Ludwig, Peter Hahn, Ingeborg Waldschmidt. The Italian doctor and educationalist Maria Montessori respected young children's will to be independent and nurtured their desire and ability to look after themselves and learn in a spirit of self-motivation and self-determination. Various aspects of Montessori's holistic approach to education are illustrated here by representative examples of Children's Houses dating from before and just after World War II, showing their architecture, furniture and teaching materials. Historical photographs of everyday life in Montessori schools and Children's Houses ? of children working with the teaching materials ? are published here for the first time in the context of Maria Montessori's educational principles. Examples of contemporary architecture of Gunter Behnisch and Herman Hertzberger testify to the high aesthetic standards and child-centred approach of Montessori education and at the same time illustrate how this philosophy of education is practiced today. From the dust jacket front flap: The Italian doctor and educationalist Maria Montessori respected young children's will to be independent and nurtured their desire and ability to look after themselves and learn in a spirit of self-motivation and self-determination. Various aspects of Montessori's holistic approach to education are illustrated here by representative examples of Children's Houses dating from before and just after World War II, showing their architecture, furniture and teaching materials. Historical photographs of everyday life in Montessori schools and Children's Houses -- of children working with the teaching materials -- are published here for the first time in the context of Maria Montessori's educational principles. Examples of contemporary architecture testify to the child-centered approach of Montessori education and at the same time illustrate how this philosophy of education is practiced today.' From the rear cover: 'Maria Montessori ranks as one of the most outstanding educationalists of the twentieth century. Her philosophy centered on respecting children in their individuality and doing everything possible to encourage there autonomous development. The teaching materials she developed to train the senses and movement play a central role in Montessori education. This publication highlights representative examples of Montessori Children's Houses before World War II; it illustrates their architecture, interior design, and furniture, and gives an idea of what everyday life there would have been like. It also describes the materials used to promote sensory development and teaching language and mathematics. This comprehensive overview is complemented by examples of contemporary architecture by Gunter Behnisch and Herman Hertzberger.' Maria Montessori states: 'When we speak in education of the freedom of the child, it is often forgotten that it is not the same thing as leaving the child to his or her own devices. Simply freeing children from restraint, so that they do what they like, does not mean giving them freedom. Freedom is always a great positive achievement; it is not easily attained. It is not gained simply by eliminating tyranny or breaking chains. Freedom has to be built; it has to be created both in the inner and outer world. This is our true task and the only help we can proffer to the child.'.
