Rem Koolhaas, 1944 in Rotterdam, Niederlande geboren, arbeitete als Journalist und Filmemacher, bevor er 1968 in London anfing, Architektur zu studieren. 1975 gründete er zusammen mit Madelone Friesendorp, Zoe und Elia Zenghelis das Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) gründete, das sich theoretisch und praktisch der Metropole und besondern New York verschriebt. Seite 1995 ist er auch Professur für Architektur an der Harvard University. Neben vielen anderen internationalen Bauten verwirklichte Koolhaas den Prada Tower in San Francisco, die Niederländische Botschaft in Berlin, die Oper von Cardiff, die Erweiterung der Tate Gallery, das ZKM in Karlsruhe oder die Kunsthalle von Rotterdam.
